Things I need to know about Medicare Supplements

When do I qualify to purchase a Supplement Plan?

A When you turn 65, you qualify for Original Medicare, which are Parts A/ B. You also qualify if you are less than 65 and are medically eligible for Medicare Part A and B. At that point, you can purchase "supplemental" insurance plan, which picks up the deductibles and exposures that original Medicare does not.

How do I enroll in Original Medicare (A&B)?

You get Part A by turning 65 or due to medical reasons. You enroll at your local Medicare office for Part B.

Is there a premium for Medicare Part A and B?

Part A does not have a premium. Part B (depending on if you still are earning an income) is $115.40.

Does Medicare Supplemental Insurance cover my prescriptions?

No, people must purchase Part D (Drug) to cover their prescription drugs. This is an additional policy with premium.

What is Medicare Advantage?

This is referred to as Part C-HMO. When purchasing Medicare Advantage the carrier of choice becomes the primary insurer and replaces Medicare. These plans have rich benefits and may have a zero premium in California. They also include Part D. Advantage Plans are not available in counties in the California Market.
